Stair parts and the three Building Code numbers

Oak treads, white risers, a capped newel and a continuous rail. For stairs in a house, Ontario's Building Code sets these limits:

865–1 070 mmHandrail height, measured from a line touching the tread nosings (9.8.7.4).
900 mmMinimum height of a guard inside a dwelling unit (9.8.8.3).
100 mmNo opening in a guard may let a ball this size pass through (9.8.8.5).

Questions about built-ins and carpentry

Do I need a permit for a built-in in Toronto?

No. Toronto needs no building permit to install cabinetry and millwork. Adding or removing a wall does.

Who wires the lights and outlets in a wall unit?

A Licensed Electrical Contractor, who files the notification with the ESA.

How high must a stair handrail be?

Between 865 mm and 1 070 mm, measured from a line touching the tread nosings (Ontario Building Code 9.8.7.4).

Can you build around an electric fireplace?
