One kitchen, start to finish
From backsplash to handover
Five photos of the same kitchen as it came together.

Fluted tile goes up behind the gas range.

Counter, backsplash and outlets meet under the LED strip.

Range and hood cover in; the island top is still wrapped.

The long run: uppers to the ceiling over oak-look drawers.

Handed over: island seating for three.

Another kitchen, mid-installation
A kitchen halfway through
The slab backsplash is up and cut around the hood duct, the upper boxes hang without doors, the counters are under paper. Changes are still easy now, so check:
- Outlet positions on the backsplash.
- Hood height above the range.
- Cabinet layout before the doors and handles go on.
Choosing a counter
Quartz or granite: what the makers say
| Quartz (Caesarstone) | Granite | |
|---|---|---|
| Sealing | Does not need to be sealed regularly. | Most granite counters do not need sealing; in many cases a quality sealer makes sense. |
| Stains | Hard, nonporous and stain-resistant. | Wiped after each meal, it rarely has staining problems. |

Permits
Do you need a permit? It depends on the city
| City | Needs a permit | No permit |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto | Adding or removing walls; installing or changing plumbing systems | Installing cabinetry and millwork; replacing plumbing fixtures |
| Vaughan | Any structural alteration in a house | Ask the city about non-structural work |
| Markham | Wall removal; plumbing-only work takes a plumbing permit | Ask the city |
| Richmond Hill | Alterations | Building kitchen or bathroom cupboards |
Electrical work in Ontario
- Only a Licensed Electrical Contractor may be hired to do electrical work in your home.
- The contractor files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA).
- Keep the ESA Certificate of Acceptance: your insurer may ask for it, and you may need it when you sell.
A condo kitchen needs the board first
If the work touches the building's common elements, the board must approve it by resolution, and you sign an agreement with the corporation on cost and upkeep. The declaration says what counts as common elements.
