A treated-wood deck, from the ground up
Wood Preservation Canada's tips for a pressure-treated deck, bottom layer first.
- GroundSod out, soil compacted, cloth and gravel for drainage.
- Posts"Ground Contact" lumber where wood meets soil or concrete.
- JoistsCrown up, off the ground, flashed where they meet the house.
- Every cutTwo coats of end-cut preservative.
- BoardsBark side up, 1/8" apart if dry, tight if damp.

Western Red Cedar

- Naturally resistant to rot and insects.

- Stainless screws; copper or electroplated ones streak the wood.
Treated, above ground

- Framing and boards clear of soil and concrete.
- Fasteners
- Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless; no direct contact with aluminum.
Treated, ground contact

- Posts in soil or concrete; more preservative.

Permits
Does your deck need a permit? Each city sets its own line

Fence heights
How tall can a fence be in Toronto?
- 2.0 mA privacy screen on an unroofed deck, measured from its surface.
- 2.5 mA side or rear fence along a street, public walkway or apartment lot.
- OpenNear a driveway: see-through fencing, like chain-link, for the first 2.4 m.
