What gets covered before a dark finish goes on

A small washroom, mid-job. Dark colours show every slip on the ceiling or the trim, so the room is closed off first:

  1. Green tape along the ceiling line, so the white ceiling stays white.
  2. Tape on the baseboards and around the pipe stubs.
  3. Plastic sheeting over the whole floor.
  4. The patterned back panel taped on both edges, so the finish stops in a straight line.

Which sheen goes where, in Benjamin Moore's words

Flat & matte

Where
Flat: ceilings and low-traffic walls. Matte: bedrooms, dining rooms, family rooms.
Cleaning
Flat is hard to clean and can burnish with rubbing; matte takes frequent washing.

Eggshell

Where
High-traffic walls, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms.
Cleaning
Easy to clean, with almost no shine.

Satin & semi-gloss

Where
Satin: windows, shutters, trim, interior doors. Semi-gloss: millwork, trim, doors, kitchen cabinets.
Cleaning
Satin resists stains better than eggshell.

Older house? Check the old paint for lead first

  1. Before 1960Health Canada: the home probably contains lead-based paint.
  2. 1960–1990The exterior may contain lead paint; interior surfaces may have smaller amounts.
  3. After 1990Houses should not contain lead.

Health Canada's advice: test the paint first; never remove it with sanders, heat guns or blowlamps; keep children and pregnant women out of the work area. Old paint in good condition can be painted over.

What changes the cost of a paint job

Repairs first
Nail pops, cracks and dents filled and primed before any colour.
Ceilings and height
Ceilings, stairwells and two-storey walls need more time and ladders.
Trim, doors and railings
How many there are, and whether they change colour too.
Paint or plaster
A troweled plaster finish is a different job from two coats of paint.
Outside
The surface, its height and the number of dry days needed.

Painting questions

How cold is too cold for exterior paint?

It depends on the product. Benjamin Moore lists 35–100°F (about 2–38°C) for Aura Exterior Satin; we check the data sheet of the paint you pick.

My house was built before 1960. Is the old paint a problem?

Health Canada says it probably contains lead paint. Have it tested, and do not sand it or strip it with heat.

Do you do decorative plaster as well as paint?
