Preparation Decides How the Paint Lasts
Paint fails where the surface underneath was not ready for it. Before anything is opened, walls are washed down so the film has clean substrate to grip, glossy trim is scuff-sanded, and nail pops, dents and cracked corner bead are cut out and filled rather than skimmed over. Old caulk that has split along the trim line comes out and goes back in fresh. Water stains, smoke and knot bleed are sealed with a stain-blocking primer, because latex rolled over an unsealed stain will let it read back through within weeks. Fresh drywall repairs are spot-primed so the patch does not flash next to the surrounding wall once the light hits it. Floors, fixtures, hardware and everything not being painted are covered and masked before the first coat, and the site is swept and put back at the end of each day rather than at the end of the job.

Ceilings are cut and rolled before walls and walls before trim, so every edge ends as a cut line rather than a touch-up. Outdoors, the calendar decides more than the paint does. Exterior work in Toronto belongs in the stretch of the year when surface temperature and overnight dew still let the film cure, not in late-season damp. Wood siding, fascia and soffit are scraped back to sound material and primed before finish coats; previously painted brick and stucco need the loose material off and a masonry-appropriate coating; aluminum and vinyl need a bonding primer, or the finish sits on the surface and comes away in sheets.
