Small jobs and Toronto permits

Most handyman jobs need none. Changing pipes, walls or openings does.

No permit in Toronto

  • Repairing or replacing plumbing fixtures: a faucet, a toilet, a sink.
  • Cabinetry and millwork, such as shelves and trim.
  • A new door in the same opening of a detached house, same size.
  • Installing a sump pump.

Needs a permit

  • Installing or changing a plumbing or heating system.
  • Structural changes to walls, windows or doors, such as a wider opening.
  • A deck more than 60 cm above the ground.

Installs from our jobs

Five installs, five different homes

Each photo comes from a separate Art Style job, not one project.

Before the TV goes on

Three boxes cut, nothing mounted yet

The boxes are cut and one wire is through. Holes in slab or tile cannot be moved, so settle these first:

  • The TV's height from your usual seat.
  • The mount model and its bolt pattern.
  • Where the cables run and which outlet sits behind the screen.

When a small job needs a licensed trade

Ontario sets who may be hired for these three.

ESA

Electrical: a new fixture circuit, an added outlet

Only a Licensed Electrical Contractor may be hired. They file the notification with the ESA.

Keep: the Certificate of Acceptance for your insurer and a future sale.

ESA, working with general contractors

TSSA

Gas: a fireplace, a furnace, a water heater

Fuel-fired appliances must be maintained by TSSA-registered contractors with certified gas technicians.

Check: the registration in TSSA's online lookup.

TSSA, hire registered professionals

Permit

Plumbing: new pipes, a moved drain

In Toronto a fixture swap needs no permit; changing the pipes behind it does.

Ask: whether the job stays on the existing pipes.
