Fans, heated floors, lit mirrors

  • Wiring them is electrical work: in Ontario, hire only a Licensed Electrical Contractor, who notifies the ESA.
  • Keep the Certificate of Acceptance; an insurer or a sale may require it.

Before the vanity top goes on

The vanity boxes hang without a top, the shower glass is in, and a wire waits in the bare wall. Check now:

  • Where that wire sits for the mirror or light.
  • That open drawers clear the toilet.
  • The sink positions before the top is cut.

What it is
A fleece-faced polyethylene sheet set in thin-set.
When tile can go on
Straight away, no waiting period.

LATICRETE HYDRO BAN

What it is
A liquid in two coats that dries olive green.
Flood test
Two hours after the second coat at 21 °C; 24 hours at 10–21 °C.

MAPEI AquaDefense

What it is
Premixed liquid rubber; fabric reinforces corners and drains.
When tile can go on
After 30–50 minutes; flood test after 12 hours.

Do I need a permit to replace a toilet or vanity in Toronto?

No. Replacing plumbing fixtures needs no permit; adding or moving plumbing does.

Does turning a tub into a walk-in shower need a permit?

Yes, if the drain moves: that changes the plumbing system.

Who wires the exhaust fan or a heated floor?

A Licensed Electrical Contractor, who notifies the ESA of the work.

How soon can tile go on the waterproofing?

On Schluter KERDI, right away. On MAPEI AquaDefense, after 30–50 minutes.
