Bathroom waterproofing is the hidden layer that decides how long a shower lasts. What a proper system involves, where leaks start, what to ask before tiling.

Every part of a bathroom renovation is visible except the one that decides how long it lasts. Bathroom waterproofing goes on before the tile and disappears underneath it, and once that tile is set, nobody — not you, not the next owner — can see whether it was done properly. Every other shortcut in a bathroom announces itself within a week. This one waits.
What follows is what that layer is, where water gets past it, how the systems differ, and what to settle before anyone tiles — written for houses and condos in Toronto and the GTA, where a second-floor shower usually has a finished ceiling under it and often a cold exterior wall behind it.
It is a continuous, water-tight barrier built into the shower and wet floor before any tile goes on: a membrane bonded to walls, floor, curb and bench, sealed at every corner, seam and pipe penetration. Its job is not to keep the tile dry. It is to catch the water that gets through the tile and return it to the drain.
A tiled shower is not a sealed box. It is a wet assembly, built on the assumption that water gets behind the surface. The membrane decides where that water goes next: down to the drain, or sideways into the framing, subfloor and ceiling below.
No. Porcelain tile is close to impervious, but cement grout absorbs water, and the joints where tile meets tub, curb or floor move with the building. A tiled wall with no membrane behind it gets wet through daily and never fully dries.
Two things get sold as substitutes and are not. Epoxy grout is far less absorbent, but water also travels at the movement joints and around the fixtures, so it narrows the entry rather than closing it. Grout sealer is worse: a topical treatment that wears off with cleaning, on a schedule nobody tracks.
Cement backer board causes the same confusion. It will not rot or swell when wet, which is why it is the right substrate — but water passes straight through it. Water-resistant describes the board's own behaviour, not a barrier. Moisture-resistant gypsum, the green board still occasionally proposed as a shower backer, does not belong behind tile in a wet area at all.
Almost never in the middle of a wall. Failures concentrate at the transitions — corners, the wall-to-floor joint, the curb, the drain, the niche, the seat — because those are where a membrane changes direction or is interrupted. None of the failures below is a materials problem; every one is a detailing decision nobody photographs.

One method, used complete, with the components the manufacturer intends together. Four systems are in common use in the GTA. They are not interchangeable halfway through a shower, and the choice between them matters less than finishing whichever one is picked.

These are certified as assemblies, not as ingredients. Manufacturers test their membrane with their own corners, band, sealant and drain flange, so mixing brands mid-shower puts the work outside what any of them supports. If a quote names a system, every component should carry that name.
Because a membrane only works if the water can leave. On a flat pan it does not run anywhere — it sits on the liner, permanently soaks the mortar above it, and eventually shows up as a smell that returns a day after every cleaning.
A traditional mortar-bed shower is sloped twice: a pre-slope beneath the liner, so water reaching the liner runs to the weep holes, and the bed above it, so surface water runs to the grate. Skipping the pre-slope is the most common defect in older showers built this way, and it becomes invisible the moment the second bed is poured.
Bonded systems reverse the logic — the membrane sits on the sloped substrate and water drains at the surface, never through a bed. That is why the drain must match the method: a clamping-ring drain belongs with a liner, a bonding-flange drain with a bonded membrane. The two get mixed on real jobs, and the drain then becomes the weakest point in an otherwise sound shower.
Only the shower has to be waterproofed, but on any second-floor bathroom the whole floor is worth it. Splash from a freestanding tub, an overflowing sink, a failed supply line and a leaking toilet seal all land on the same floor, and a membrane is the difference between mopping and a ceiling repair.
Worth extending: across the whole wet floor, a short way up the wall behind tub and vanity, under the vanity toe kick, and over the door threshold. Two joints take silicone rather than grout: tile to tub, and tile to shower floor. Those move, and cement grout cracks in them by design.
One Toronto-specific trap: an older bathroom on an exterior wall often has polyethylene behind the backer board as its vapour barrier. Add a membrane to the face of that wall and the cavity is sealed on both sides, so anything that gets in cannot dry in either direction. Decide that assembly before building it.
Less than most people assume. The Code's requirement is about the finish: wall surfaces around a tub or shower must be smooth, hard and non-absorbent to a set height above the drain. That is a standard for the visible surface, not a specification for the barrier behind it — tile over backer board can satisfy it with no membrane at all.
The membrane standard lives elsewhere: bonded waterproof membranes for tile are certified to ANSI A118.10 in North America, and the Terrazzo, Tile and Marble Association of Canada publishes the details the trade works to. Confirm the current rules for your own job against the Ontario Building Code. You test it. On a shower pan that means plugging the drain, filling to just below the top of the curb, marking the water line and leaving it a full day — the standard trade practice is a 24-hour flood test. If the line drops, or anything appears on the ceiling below, the problem is found while it still costs nothing to fix.
It is the only moment in the project when the barrier can be verified. After the tile goes down, the next test is the shower itself, run by your family over years, with the results read off the ceiling downstairs. Test a bonded membrane once it has cured for the period the manufacturer states, and on a second floor tell whoever is below. Photographs of the membrane and the test are the only record the layer exists.
It should name the system, not the outcome. A line reading "waterproof shower" says nothing. A line naming the manufacturer and method, the substrate, the drain type and whether the pan is flood-tested describes something you can check on site while it happens.
When two quotes for the same bathroom are far apart, this is one of the places the difference hides — reading a contractor quote properly covers the rest. Ask to see what is behind the tile before it is covered; a contractor who has done it properly has no reason to mind.
They rarely look like a leak at first. They look like a maintenance problem: grout failing in the same spot, silicone that will not stay put, a smell that returns. Any of these is worth investigating rather than re-grouting.
Repointing grout on any of those buys quiet, not a repair. The water is already behind the tile.
Waterproofing is a small share of the labour and effectively all of the risk, so be specific while the walls are still bare.

Not in any lasting way. The barrier has to sit behind the tile and run continuously through the corners, curb and drain, and none of those are reachable once the tile is on. Surface treatments — sealers, coatings, re-grouting — slow water down at the face and are worth doing as maintenance, but they do not replace a membrane. A shower leaking through the assembly has to be opened up.
Yes. Cement backer board is the correct substrate because it stays stable when wet and will not rot or swell, but water passes straight through it. It is a base for the barrier, not the barrier itself. The one exception is an integrated foam board system, where the board is manufactured to be waterproof and the joints and screws are sealed as part of the installation.
Treat it as a wet area. A tub surround takes less water than a shower if there is no showerhead over it, but the joint where tile meets the tub moves more than any other in the bathroom, and any tub with a shower above it is a shower wall. Use a membrane over a proper substrate, and silicone rather than grout at the tub joint.
No. Inspections check compliance with the Building Code and the approved drawings — structure, plumbing, fire separation, egress. The membrane is not inspected as a system, and many bathroom renovations involve no permit at all. The flood test on the pan, done before tiling and either witnessed or photographed, is the check that actually tells you something.
