Flooring Starts With the Subfloor
Most flooring complaints trace back to what was underneath, not to the material on top. Before anything goes down we check the subfloor: high and low spots read against a straightedge, loose sheathing screwed back into the joists to kill squeaks, and a moisture reading taken on any concrete slab before glue-down or engineered plank goes near it. Levelling compound, plywood underlay or an acoustic underlayment goes in wherever the readings say it is needed. Solid and engineered flooring then sits in the room to acclimate before the first board is fastened, because wood installed at the wrong moisture content is why gaps open in February and boards cup in July.
