Concrete, heated or plywood: what the maker allows

The surface under the floor decides which wood can go on it. These are the rules Mirage, a Canadian hardwood maker, publishes for its own floors. We follow the guide of whichever floor you buy.

Caring for a marble floor

Do

Clean with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or mild dish soap in warm water.
Dust mop often with a clean, untreated dry mop.
Put mats inside and outside the entrance, with a slip-resistant back, to stop grit that scratches.

Avoid

Lemon, vinegar or any acid. They can dull or etch marble.
Scouring powders and creams, since the abrasive can scratch some stones.

What changes the price of a floor

Area and pattern: Square footage, and chevron or herringbone takes far more cuts than a straight lay.
What comes up first: Carpet, glued vinyl or old tile, and the adhesive left under it.
The subfloor: Levelling compound, new plywood, or screwing down boards that squeak.
Stairs: How many treads, risers and nosings change with the floor.
Trim: Baseboard, shoe moulding and the thresholds between rooms.

Can solid hardwood go on a concrete slab?

Mirage does not recommend its 3/4 inch solid floor over concrete. Its engineered and Lock floors can go on a slab, with a membrane under the planks.

Can a wood floor go over radiant heat?

Mirage allows its engineered and Lock floors over radiant heat, except Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) and Hickory.

Can wood and marble sit at the same level?

Yes. On the level shown on this page, oak chevron and marble meet at the stair opening, with a straight border plank along the edge.
