Boarding and Taping, Done in the Right Order

Drywall goes on ceilings first and walls second, so the wall sheets hold the ceiling edge tight and the corner has something solid to bear on. Sheets are laid out to land on framing and to keep butt joints — the ones with no factory taper, and the hardest to hide — off the middle of a long wall and away from windows, where side light rakes across the surface and shows every hump. Screws are set just below the paper without tearing it; a torn screw hole has nothing left to grip and works its way back through the paint. The board itself changes with the room: moisture-resistant board in bathrooms and laundry rooms, cement or fibreglass-faced backer behind tile in a shower, fire-rated board where the code calls for it on a garage ceiling or a party wall, and damped board or resilient channel where a bedroom backs onto a mechanical room. Corner bead is fastened straight rather than bedded in compound and hoped for. Then tape and three coats of compound, each one spread wider than the last, sanded between coats, and a primer over the whole surface so paper and compound take paint the same way.
